Frequently Asked Questions: Newborn Edition
Hello! I am so happy that you’re considering us to potentially be your Newborn Photographer. First, I want to say CONGRATULATIONS! Your bundle of joy will be here before you know it, and your world will be changed for the better
Those first few days, weeks, and months go by quickly, so that’s why it’s such a great time to get professional photos done so you can capture those moments in time and remember them forever.
As you’re considering who you want to be your newborn’s photographer, I am sure you have questions regarding our process and offerings. This blog entry is focused around answering the most frequently asked questions that we receive about our newborn portrait sessions. However, should you have any additional questions other than the ones mentioned here, then reach out to us at any time so we can help provide clarification into the process and offerings!
Q: How old should my baby be to get photos taken?
A: The best time to get your baby’s photos taken is when they are 5-18 days old. This does not mean we can’t have a newborn session if you have already had your little one! Babies tend to still be a little “curly and pose-able” when they are in that age frame but I typically have no issues when they are a little older as well. Every baby is different so typically age in that first month doesn’t make a big difference :)
Q: When should I reach out to schedule my newborn photos?
A: While there is not a particular timeline you need to reach out to me, I would recommend reaching anytime after the first trimester since we have limited availability each month for newborn sessions so you will want to make sure you secure your spot.
Q: How do I reserve my spot?
A: To reserve your session, a $100 deposit is required and then we will “hold your spot” for you based on your due date month. Your $100 deposit is not an additional fee — it is applied as a credit toward your ordering appointment. Once you have given birth and rested, then I recommend reaching out to me as soon as possible so we can then schedule your official newborn session date.
Q: Do you offer in-home sessions?
A: Yes! I offer both in-studio and in-home newborn sessions. For in-home sessions, I bring a selection of my props with me so we can create softly posed newborn images. Family and sibling photos during in-home sessions are most lifestyle-focused, capturing natural connection in your own space. No matter which option you choose, sessions are baby led. I move slowly, take breaks as needed, and follow your baby’s cues to keep your baby comfortable during the session.
Q: How long will my session be?
A: Sessions may range from one to three hours. Every baby is different and they all have different needs during the session so timing depends on the needs of the baby on that particular day.
Q: Do you perform more than one newborn session a day?
A: I only perform one newborn session a day. This allows for me to give your baby the time he or she needs during the session. It also allows for cleaning procedures to be followed after the session. All linens used during the session are washed in clear detergent and any furs/non-washable props are sprayed down with baby safe disinfectants.
Q: Can siblings attend?
A: Siblings are welcome if they are being photographed with the newborn. The sibling may stay for the entirety of the session but sometimes dad or grandparents/family will take the sibling on a special “date” during the session after we finish the family portion.
Q: What should I bring?
A: The baby! But seriously, you don’t need to bring much. Accidents and poop happens! This is just how babies work. Be sure to bring several clothing changes in case your little one has an accident on the way to the studio and extra diapers just in case. I do have diapers and wipes in the studio if you forget
Also, if you formula feed, please make sure to bring extra in case they need any during the session.
Q: When will my photos be ready?
A: We will set up a zoom call approximately one week after the session and go through the photo proofs together. At this time you are able to select your favorite photos, which are available in digitals, wall art, and albums. Once selections are made, the final high resolution digitals are ready in about 1-2 weeks.
Q: Do I need to order my products from you?
A: You aren’t required to purchase photos through me. I do offer a large selection of printing options and printing packages, though. As a mama, I know how hard it can be to remember to order photos and how difficult it becomes to put together wall art. I am here to help guide you through it if you choose and offer prints, albums, and wall art through a professional printing lab.
Q: Will my gallery be private?
A: Yes! Your high resolution digital images will be sent through a password protected gallery.
Q: How much does a newborn session cost?
A: I strongly feel like your newborn session isn’t a “one size fits all.” Rather than have a few set packages, I offer digital-only collections as well as collections that include digitals with printed products. This allows us to customize the session towards exactly what your family needs most. The digital collections begin at $395. If you’re interested in booking a maternity, newborn, or milestone together at the same time — we do offer packages that allow you to schedule ahead of time and save while doing so!
Q: How do I tell you what I want from my session?
A: I send you a questionnaire upon booking that allows you to tell me your favorite color preferences, etc. It also asks if you have any specific hobbies that you would like incorporated into the session. Through the questionnaire, I typically get a pretty good sense of what would look good together based on your answers and set up for the sessions accordingly. I never mind clients sending me specific photos that I’ve taken if you absolutely love one and want me to use a certain prop during the session.
Q: Do you offer any other portrait sessions?
A: Yes! In addition to newborn sessions, I also offer maternity, family, individual, milestone, headshot, and branding sessions all year long. Throughout the year, we also offer mini-sessions for holidays and special occasions; the best way to be notified of our mini sessions is by following us on instagram and facebook, and signing up for our newsletter, which is sent out monthly!
Q: What’s Next?
A: If you’ve liked everything you’ve seen so far, send me a message! I’d love to chat with you!
Thank you for reading and I can’t wait to hear from you! "
