Lifestyle vs. Studio Newborn Photography: Which One Is Right for You?

As new parents, you may be questioning if you want to have your newborn photos captured in-studio or in-home and if either option get better photo results than the other. The truth is, both of them are great options! Both lifestyle (in-home) and studio newborn sessions are beautiful and unique in their own way. It really comes down to what feels right for your family and the kind of memories you want to capture.

Let’s break down the differences between the two so you can decide which one fits your vision best.

Lifestyle (In-Home) Newborn Sessions

Lifestyle sessions take place in your beautiful and cozy home where your family's story is unfolding every day. These sessions are all about connection, emotion, and capturing your family just as you are in your day-to-day life.

What to Expect:

  • The focus is on natural moments such as snuggling on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, or siblings peeking into the crib.

  • Even if the photo session is in-home, I will still help with posing your little one and will bring my own props so that way we can still have some in-studio type photos, but in the comfort of your home.

  • Lighting is natural, soft, and warm. Think about the morning light streaming through the windows or the glow of your baby’s nursery lamp. However, if you would prefer to do the photos in the late morning or early afternoon, I am willing to work with your schedule. When I schedule a newborn session, I don't schedule anything else for the day so that way my time is solely dedicated to capturing the photos of you and your family!

Why Parents Love It:

  • It’s comfortable and there is no need to pack up the diaper bag or leave the house. Trust me, as a mom, I get how stressful that can be and don't want you to have to worry about that if you would prefer not to.

  • Your home becomes part of the story, making the photos deeply personal.

  • It captures real life moments like the way your baby fits into your arms, the way your dog curls up nearby, the way your home feels in those early days.

A Little Reality Check:
Your home doesn’t have to look like it belongs in a magazine. A little clutter is normal (you just had a baby!). I’ll help find the best light and angles to make your space shine.

Studio Newborn Sessions

Studio sessions are perfect for parents who love a more traditional look. These sessions take place in a controlled environment where everything from lighting to the temperature of the studio are designed with your baby's comfort and safety in mind.

What to Expect:

  • Much like in-home photos, we focus on capturing the tiny details of your little one with sweet poses and timeless setups.

  • I provide all the props, wraps, and backdrops, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

  • The studio is warm and calm, creating the perfect environment for those dreamy, sleepy baby photos. We will even turn off the overhead lights so that way it's a neutrally lit space.

Why Parents Love It:

  • You can relax while I handle all the details.

  • The results are clean, timeless, and beautifully styled.

  • It’s a great option if you love the look of posed newborn portraits or want to include specific colors or themes. And yes, the family is always welcomed to be included in the studio photos as well!

A Little Reality Check:
Studio sessions typically work best within the first two to three weeks after birth when babies are still sleepy and flexible. But if your baby is a little older, that's no issue because we can still create beautiful images that fit your family’s style.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

The best part of both of these options is that you can't choose the wrong answer. Both lifestyle and studio newborn sessions capture the beauty of this fleeting season in your family’s life.

If you love the idea of cozy, candid moments that tell your family’s story in your home, a lifestyle session might be perfect. If you’re drawn to traditional, styled portraits that highlight your baby’s tiny features, a studio session could be the way to go.

The Bottom Line

Whether it’s in your living room or in the studio, the goal is to preserve the love, connection, and wonder of these early days. There’s no “better” option, only what feels right for your family.

No matter which you choose, your photos will tell the story of your baby’s first days in a way that’s meaningful, beautiful, and uniquely yours.

Hope to see you soon!
