Everything Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

What I Wish Every New Parent Knew About Newborn Photography

I can't tell you how many times I've heard some version of this: "We need to wait until the baby is sleeping through the night." Or, "What if my baby cries the whole time?" Or, "Newborn photos are too expensive."

Here's what I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart: Everything doesn't have to be perfect in order for you to have beautiful photos. In fact, the imperfect moments? Those are often the ones that matter most.

Let's take a moment to discuss some of the most common misconceptions I hear from parents who are hesitant to book a newborn session. Because I promise you - none of these things matter as much as you think they do.

#1: "We are going to be too tired for the session"

I will be honest - tired may be your entire state of mind that first month or two (or more) after having a new baby . Newborn sessions are specifically designed for those first couple weeks of life when babies are still sleepy so naturally, parents will be sleepy too. As a trained newborn photographer, I work with your little one to ensure a smooth photo session for all involved and so that you don't have to worry about a thing and can sit back and relax while I do baby only portion. I also have a bathroom with a mirror for any parents that may want to come in and just get ready at the studio so they don’t have to at home. The other options is using the hair and makeup artist I love and she will come to the studio to get mamas ready for their session.

Yes, you might be running off two hours of sleep and your third cup of coffee. Yes, your baby might get a little upset during the photo session. But don't worry - if the baby needs to pause to eat, we will take a break. If they need a diaper change, we can pause and change them. If they're fussy- no worries, we will give them a minute to calm down. This is a judgement-free zone where you and your little one are safe and don't have expectations to meet.

#2: "What If My Baby Cries the Whole Time?"

Babies cry. It’s probably going to happen and it’s ok!

Crying is their way of communicating with us when they're unhappy or need something. As a newborn photographer, I am fully prepared to handle scenarios like this. I remember when my boys used to cry a lot, and it often took just some time to figure out what they needed. However, some of the best photos are when the little ones wake up, yawn, and look at you with their beautiful new-eyes!

So, if your little one is having a rough day, we will work through it. We can take breaks, we can talk through the process, and we can support each other throughout the photo session. My priority is to make sure the little one is safe, happy, and healthy, but also that you get to enjoy this photo session as well and know you have someone there supporting you along the journey.

#3: "It's Too Expensive"

I get it, newborn photography is an investment. Having a baby is expensive already with the hospital bills, diapers, formula, childcare, and more. You may wonder if it's worth it or if you can even justify taking on another expense.

While I may be bias, let me walk you through why this investment is one of the most important ones you can make while your little one is still little. This time in their life will only happen once, and with a blink of an eye they grow up. You will never get this time back with them, but photos hold onto those first memories in their life forever. These photos aren't just for you but also for your child and your grandchildren. They tell the beginning of your family's story. These are one of the many things you will look back on and be grateful you invested in.

One piece of advice that I try to share with everyone is that you will never regret investing in newborn photos, you will only regret NOT investing in them to look back on one day.

The Truth About Newborn Photography

Newborn photography and perfection are not synonyms. But, they can work together to create an environment that is safe, nurturing, and caring for your little one while we capture these precious moments in their life.

This moment is about preserving the way your baby fits in your arms when you hold them. It's about remembering their little feet and tiny toes. It's about giving yourself the permission to be present, imperfect, and proud of this wonderful life you have brought into the world.

Don't think you have to have it all together, because in life, none of us have it all together we just fake it till we make it. Don't let this be something you stress or worry about, let this be an experience you look forward to and remember for a lifetime. Together, we will preserve these memories and create something beautiful.
